Guest Column: The threat of antibiotic resistance

If we want a future in which antibiotics remain a central pillar of health care, we need all animal farms to take similar action immediately. Congress and the Barack Obama administration can make this happen by requiring that livestock and poultry operations stop using antibiotics on animals that aren’t sick. This immediate action is critical to ensure that these precious medicines are preserved for generations to come.

Stop overusing antibiotics

"Superbugs are more prevalent than ever: the CDC reported 2 million cases of antibiotic resistant infections last year, with 23,000 deaths. This is in large part because most antibiotics sold in this country are not given to sick humans. They are given to healthy livestock...I hope people will join me in IllinoisPIRG’s action calling on the Obama administration to stop this reckless antibiotic overuse so we never have to know what an epidemic without a cure feels like."

Doctors, health groups call for end to antibiotic abuse on factory farms

Doctors and health organizations called upon the Barack Obama administration Aug. 5 to immediately restrict the use of antibiotics on factory farms when animals are not sick. The doctors are part of a nationwide coalition of more than 2,000 medical professionals working against the declining effectiveness of antibiotics as a result of overuse and misuse.
